December 1 – February 28
Winter brings a slower pace of life in Fogo Island’s coastal communities, though excitement abounds towards the interior of the Island as local people retreat to seasonal winter cabins to enjoy exuberant days of snowmobiling, snowshoeing, sledding, and winter sports. Fogo Islanders use winter as an opportunity to recuperate from the busy warmer months as they mend fishing nets, celebrate holidays (Christmastime on Fogo Island is like nowhere else), and enjoy traditional jiggs dinners of salt meat and pease pudding with friends and loved ones. Winter activities can also include skating and hockey games on frozen ponds, storm watching, cabin visits, caribou tracking, and cross-country skiing. You will quickly find that it isn’t difficult to keep warm in both body and spirit during Fogo Island’s dynamic winter months.
